The fact is, measuring and estimating a crown molding project is quite simple. With just a little instruction and smidgen of confidence, just about anyone can do it. Be aware that this is a technique for estimating your project, it’s not a perfect system. Always purchase more than you estimate, just in case. Remember this: it’s cheaper to buy an extra piece with this order, than to order a single piece alone.

Keywords

  • Inside corner: Imagine a box. The corners inside the box are inside corners.
  • Outside Corner: Keep imagining a box. The corners outside of the box are outside corners.
  • Linear Foot: A Linear foot is exactly the same as a regular foot. No conversion is required. 12 linear feet is exactly the same as 12 feet.
  • Breadth: This is the size of the moldings face, it’s the part you will actually see once the crown molding is installed.

Estimating a room with inside corners only

  1. Measure along the walls  from corner to corner
  2. Add those measurements together to find the linear footage
  3. Multiply linear feet by 12
  4. Divide by the length in inches of chosen crown molding (example: 94.5”)
  5. Add 10% to account for any mistakes

Linear Feet ∙ 12 ÷ Length + 10% = Estimated amount of crown molding needed

Estimating a room with both inside and outside corners

Step 1

  1. Count all outside corners.
  2. Multiply the number of outside corners by the breadth of the crown molding
  3. Multiply that number by 2
  4. Divide by the length in inches of chosen crown molding (example: 94.5”)
  5. Write this number down and save it for step 3

Total outside corners ∙ Breadth ∙ 2 ÷ Length = Additional molding for outside corners

Step 2

  1. Measure along the walls  from corner to corner
  2. Add those measurements together to find linear footage
  3. Multiply linear feet by 12
  4. Divide by the length in inches of chosen crown molding (example: 94.5”)

Linear Feet ∙ 12 ÷ Length = Estimated amount of crown molding excluding outside corners

Step 3

  1. Add totals from step 1 and step 2
  2. Add 10% to account for any mistakes

Step 1 total + Step 2 total + 10% = Estimated amount of crown molding needed
